LONDON:A new study claims that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra could cause heart problems.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is being conducted by a team of researchers at Pfizer, the US biopharmaceutical company that made Viagra, the first oral drug for impotence. The study was funded by the drug maker from the US Food and Drug Administration.
Viagra, which was first introduced in 1998, had a similar effect in men with heart disease. But the drug caused more problems for impotence than any other treatment. In addition, Viagra was associated with an increased risk of death in men taking nitrates.
In order to prove the link, researchers at the University of Adelaide, in Adelaide, South Australia, used data from the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) clinical trials. The drugs are also available in generic form, but they are more expensive, and are not available in the same form as the branded versions.
They are not new drugs. In fact, a number of first-time users have developed heart disease, but only one has been diagnosed with the condition since 1998. About a quarter of those men who used the drug had heart disease.
The study found that Viagra caused a heart attack in one in five men. But it was not associated with other adverse events.
"The findings are encouraging and warrant further investigation into the link between Viagra and heart problems," says Dr David R. Gorman, a professor of medicine at the University of Adelaide.
The study is "very promising," he adds.
It may also lead to new treatments for heart disease. It is not clear what effect Viagra will have on heart disease, but it could be an option for patients with heart problems who want to avoid Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs.
Dr Gorman says the study is "very exciting".
But Dr R. Gorman, of the University of Adelaide, says there are other new treatments for heart problems. "We are currently on an experimental basis to see whether they can work for patients who do not suffer from the underlying conditions that lead to heart attacks."
He says there is a "need to understand the full scope of the potential risk of heart problems with Viagra and other treatments."
Viagra is an approved drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, but it is not known whether it can cause heart problems in men with other problems.
Professor Mark H. Condon, of the department of clinical pharmacology at the University of Adelaide, says there is a need for further research on the potential link between Viagra and heart problems.
But he adds the study will be an important step in the understanding of the potential risk of heart problems with Viagra. "I am very confident that the study will be of benefit to our patients," he says.
Condon says it is a "huge responsibility" to understand the full extent of the problem.
He says it is important to see who is at increased risk of developing heart problems.

Individuals with a history of, such as heart problems (angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats) or recent heart attack, should exercise caution when using Viagra. What is Erectile Dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction can be brought on by a man's penis running out of water or being unable to holdan erection. This condition can be caused by various factors, but it can be an integral part of men's overall erectile health, particularly by affecting men with low blood pressure. However, despite being a cause for concern, Erectile Dysfunction (ED) can sometimes be managed through a generous supply of fresh, fresh Black and red Viagra tablets. This medication is a PDE5 inhibitor, which means it increases blood flow to the penis by increasing the production of a substance that helps firm up a penis during sexual activity. This increase in blood flow can help men to achieve and maintain an erection. However, Erectile Dysfunction (ED) can also lead to a slow down if it is started before the activity has started. It's crucial to exercise caution and only use ED medication after a few hours it is supposed to start. This means taking it on a full day before having sex, limit alcohol consumption, and only use it once or twice a week.Individuals with diabetes can also potentially be prescribed this medication, but it's not advised when using it for high blood pressure. This medication can strain the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis, leading to increased blood flow and a widened penis. It can also slow down the action of other erectile dysfunction medications, such as Viagra.
